The Faculty of Science at Cairo University Renews ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 Certifications Following Successful AJA Audit
As part of its ongoing commitment to implementing the highest standards of quality, sustainability, occupational health, and safety, the Faculty of Science at Cairo University welcomed a delegation from AJA, the ISO certification body, to conduct the periodic surveillance audit for the renewal of its certifications in accordance with the international standards ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
The audit took place in the presence of Professor Dr. Soheir Ramadan Fahmy, Dean of the Faculty, along with the vice deans, directors of administrative units, and heads of the relevant departments. The visit aimed to assess the Faculty's compliance with the requirements of the international standards and evaluate the effectiveness of its environmental management and occupational health and safety systems, reflecting the Faculty's dedication to providing a safe, sustainable, and high-quality educational and research environment.
During the opening session, Professor Dr. Soheir Ramadan Fahmy presented the Faculty's sustainability strategy, emphasizing that environmental management and occupational health and safety are fundamental pillars of the Faculty's institutional development vision. She highlighted the Faculty's integrated approach, which links quality assurance, sustainability, and risk management to enhance educational and research excellence in line with international best practices.
She also reviewed the Faculty's key environmental initiatives, including energy and water conservation, safe waste management, proper disposal of laboratory and chemical waste, and initiatives aimed at reducing the Faculty's carbon footprint while promoting a culture of sustainability throughout the university community.
Addressing the Faculty's crisis management framework, the Dean explained that the Faculty has comprehensive emergency response plans based on regularly updated evacuation procedures, periodic emergency drills and simulations, and continuous enhancement of fire detection and suppression systems to ensure rapid response and safeguard the well-being of all Faculty members and visitors.
Professor Dr. Hussein Farag, Director of the Faculty's Occupational Health and Safety Management Unit, delivered a detailed presentation on the occupational health and safety management system. He outlined the Unit's operational mechanisms, risk management plans, preventive measures implemented across laboratories, classrooms, and campus facilities, as well as ongoing training programs designed to raise awareness and foster a strong safety culture among students, faculty members, and administrative staff.
He affirmed that the Faculty remains committed to providing a safe educational and working environment through full compliance with international standards and the continuous development of its occupational health and safety management system to ensure the highest levels of protection for everyone on campus.
The audit delegation also conducted site inspections across several laboratories and academic and administrative buildings. The team reviewed the implementation of environmental policies, occupational health and safety procedures, quality management documentation, and operational records to verify full compliance with the requirements of the international standards.
The audit concluded with the successful renewal of the Faculty of Science's ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certification and ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System certification after successfully meeting all audit requirements established by the AJA assessment team. This achievement reaffirms the Faculty's continued commitment to international standards and its dedication to continuous institutional improvement.
At the conclusion of the visit, the AJA delegation commended the Faculty of Science for its outstanding performance, noting its strong commitment to implementing environmental management and occupational health and safety systems, as well as the Faculty leadership's dedication to continuous improvement and institutional excellence. These efforts were reflected in the successful renewal of both ISO certifications and the continuation of the Faculty's compliance with the two international standards.
